When it comes to a tie, there have been innovations ranging from diamond studded ties to gold-plated ties. Because of all of these innovations, there are ties and brands of ties that have made it to the most expensive tie brands.

After ten years of research, scientists from the Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology, also known EMPA textile experts at St Gallen were able to create a thread that resulted from a mixture of silk and 24-carat gold. It took them almost 10 years for researchers at EMPA to make a thread that is the best kind of combination made of silk and gold. It was a gold tie project that proved that state-of-the-art technology can aid fashion progress as well.

They developed a way to coat polyester fibers with a nanometer-thin layer of the precious metal, making it supple enough to weave. After these 10 years in the making came an unprecedented result. It was the first time anyone managed to keep the shiny stuff permanently bonded to the fabric.

To celebrate its accomplishment, EMPA released a limited number of gold ties, tailored in the Zürich tie manufactory Hofmann und Co AG, just before Christmas. It started retailing at 7,500 Swiss francs (or roughly $8,450) a piece.

Even at full capacity, production is limited to 600 pieces per year. To produce these ties, a textile panel large enough to make three ties is coated with 25 grams of pure, 24 carat gold. Each tie therefore glows with 8 grams of gold.
